With the aim of making Austrian regional railway lines more attractive by 2025, this partner project developed a holistic view of the future of rail travel based on an on-demand service system. As an on-demand service, ÖBBnext enables travel operations that are fully controlled by the time preferences and needs of passengers, and enables flexible travel in the regional transport ecosystem.

The comprehensive analysis of the current situation, from the planning to the execution of passengers' journeys on Austrian regional railways, provides numerous insights and approaches for optimising the journey for the customer. Using a wide range of methods and analyses, it was possible to develop a streamlined journey with an updated ÖBB mobility portfolio and propose a new way of planning journeys in public transport. With newly designed first and last mile shuttle services, the short-term and individual needs of commuters and leisure customers can be met.

A wireframe tailored to the user flow was created to test the new experience in an example scenario. The new way of using the regional railway allows passengers to be picked up at a point of their choice and taken to, for example, major transport hubs. The journey is personalised for each passenger and enables seamless mobility in public spaces.

The constant provision of travel-related information in the app creates a reliable companion for customers and a future-oriented way of travelling.
